Feats & Abilities

No special feats recorded.

Personality

Vaelis operates with the calm, calculating precision of a scholar who has abandoned all pretense of morality. He speaks softly, often quoting from texts no one else has read, and displays a superficial politeness that makes his cruelties more disturbing. He finds ordinary human concerns tedious and wastes no empathy on those he considers inferior. His chaos manifests not as madness but as deliberate destabilization — he topples regimes not for revolution but because he finds ordered systems boring. He takes pleasure in revealing people's hypocrisies, though he claims no moral high ground himself. There is something almost playful in his evil, a childlike curiosity about how far people will sink when given permission.

Appearance

Vaelis appears as a tall, gaunt figure dressed in robes that once belonged to the Crown's scholarly order but have been altered with Ashborn glyphs stitched in ember-thread. His left hand is fire-marked from an accident (or perhaps a deliberate ritual), and he keeps it gloved or hidden. His eyes are an unsettling pale gold, said to be a side effect of prolonged exposure to Ashborn fire-magic. He wears his graying hair long, tied back with bone clips that might be ancient. A perpetual half-smile suggests he knows jokes others don't.

Backstory

Once the Second Archivist of the Crown's private collection, Vaelis spent two decades cataloguing texts from the Ashborn war. His brilliance was unquestioned; his ambition was noted. When he discovered a sealed chamber containing the Ashfall Manuscript — King Aldric's private journal detailing the genocide — he understood the kingdom's true foundation. Instead of reporting his find, he began to study the Ashborn's binding magic, learning secrets that should have remained buried. His experiments were discovered when three apprentices suffered 'accidental' immolation. He was exiled, his findings supposedly destroyed. They were not. For fifteen years he has operated in the shadows of Embershade's underworld, trading in Ashborn artifacts and forbidden knowledge, growing in power as the kingdom slept. He knows the Ember Warden wakes. He intends to be the one who binds it first.

Abilities

Mastery of Ashborn binding magic (forbidden fire-based spellwork),Ability to read and interpret ancient Ashborn glyphs,Skill in scrying through flame,Poison brewing and alchemical expertise,Political manipulation and information brokering,Limited immunity to fire damage

Voice & Behavior

Speaks in measured, literary tones, frequently referencing historical events. Rarely raises his voice. His manner is courteous to the point of unsettling — he compliments enemies before destroying them. He keeps detailed notes on everyone he meets. Displays patience that unnerves even his allies, willing to wait years for a plan to mature. When angry, he becomes quieter, not louder.
